Board workshop - 17 September 2015

The workshop of the Hunter Local Land Services (HLLS) Board was held in Tocal.

Susan Hooke chaired the meeting. Board members in attendance were Ron Campbell, Ted Laurie, James Clark and Peter Bishop Jnr, Daryl Dutton and Tony Hegarty.

HLLS support staff were also present.

Upper Hunter Strategic Assessment – Sharon Molloy, Senior Team Leader Ecosystems & Threatened Species – Office of Environment and Heritage

The Board received an update on the long term joint Commonwealth and NSW government process to improve planning for new coal mines by assessing the potential impact on biodiversity prior to lodgement of mine applications.

Strategic Planning Initiatives

The Board reviewed and discussed the future role of Hunter LLS in government strategic planning initiatives.

Implementation of the Hunter LLS Local Strategic Plan – Brett Miners, General Manager

The Board were briefed and provided feedback on key strategies to implement the Hunter LLS Local Strategic Plan. The Board reviewed and provided advice on essential factors for Hunter LLS to continue generating value for clients.

2015 NSW Landcare and Local Land Services Conference – Tony Hegarty, Ron Campbell and Brett Miners

The Board were provided feedback from the 2015 NSW Landcare and Local Land Services Conference, recently attended in Orange. The Board was briefed on the recently announced Local Landcare Coordinator initiative of NSW government and progress in supporting landcare networks/groups apply for Landcare Coordinator positions.

Travelling Stock Route Expression of Interest – Sarah Wallace, Manager Business and Finance

The Board were briefed on the Expression of Interest and continuous improvement processes for the leasing of Hunter LLS reserves commencing in October. The Board noted the Expression of Interest process is in line with Department of Industry requirements and consistent with other LLS regions.

Biosecurity Legislation and Best Practice – Dianna Watkins, Director, Policy, Legislation and Performance - Department of Primary Industries

The Board were provided with a presentation on the Biosecurity Act recently passed by NSW Parliament and implications and new opportunities for Hunter LLS in providing services to support landholders in dealing with emergency diseases, weeds and pest animals.

Organisational Performance Review – Brett Miners, General Manager

The Board were presented with a range of objectives and strategies to review and improve the financial performance of Hunter LLS and to be resilient for the future. The Board noted the complex range of factors that will influence the performance review.

Financial and Business Analysis – Sarah Wallace, Manager Business and Finance

The Board were provided with a review of analysis already completed and current and immediate future analysis to ensure financial sustainability of Hunter LLS.

Wild Dog Management and Invasive Species – Brett Miners, General Manager

The Board discussed a number of initiatives underway to assist landholders with the management of wild dogs and other invasive species. Hunter LLS staff are currently working with the Hunter Valley Combined Wild Dog Association to develop a proposal for provision of trapper support.
